A delegation led by Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), visited Baku White City together with Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, during their visit to Baku for COP29.
The tour demonstrated how Baku’s former industrial centre, known as Black City and once permeated by the smell of oil and soot, has been transformed into a testament to progress and environmental awareness. It also highlighted how Baku White City has become an example of the environmental rehabilitation, comprehensive planning and development of former industrial sites.
During the meeting, the guests emphasised the importance of establishing cooperation to implement programmes and strategies for developing technologically advanced, environmentally friendly, disaster-resilient and liveable cities, as well as strengthening the exchange of best practices in the creation and management of urban infrastructure.
The Baku White City project is being implemented within the framework of the “Comprehensive Action Plan for Improving the Environmental Situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2006–2010,” approved by an Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
