Baku, August 3, AZERTAC
As part of the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World,” the “Exchange Waste for Gifts” festival was held in front of Baku White City Office Building 2020. The event was organised by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources with the support of the Khatai District Executive Authority, Azersun Holding LLC, Tamiz Shahar OJSC, AzEkol LLC, Kontakt store, Araz supermarket chain, Libraff bookstore chain and the Təkan Public Union.
AZERTAC reports that participants handed in 4,803 litres of plastic waste, 475 litres of glass waste and 393 used batteries in exchange for various gifts.
The festival featured a waste management workshop for children, who created waste-themed drawings on eco-bags and canvas. Tamiz Shahar OJSC’s “From Waste to Art” exhibits were displayed, and children also made objects from waste materials.
Sayyara Mammadova, Head of the Environmental Education and Communication Department at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, said the event, held as part of the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World,” aimed to prevent waste, use resources more efficiently, promote waste separation and collection at source for recycling, and encourage the public to manage waste properly.
“The festival attracted public interest. Participants handed in plastic and glass waste they had sorted at home, as well as batteries classified as hazardous waste, and received various gifts in return.
“Improper waste management is one of today’s greatest global environmental challenges. Calls for action are being made in this area, and public support is needed. Campaigns like these also raise public awareness. They are organised to develop waste-sorting habits and promote recycling as part of proper waste management. The plastic and glass waste collected during these campaigns is sent for recycling, while the batteries are handed over to the Waste Management Centre LLC for disposal.”
